1 Ammonia and nitrite have been stuck at high readings for over a month with no progress.
Check water temperature is at least 24-25°C/75-77°F, since bacteria grow slowly in cooler water. Also verify you haven't been using tap water treated with chloramine without a conditioner that neutralizes it, since chloramine can suppress bacterial growth, and confirm you're not overdosing ammonia beyond 4-5 ppm, which can stall the process.

Rinsing filter media in tap water kills the chlorine-sensitive bacterial colonies living on its surface, effectively resetting part of the biofilter. Do a 50 percent water change immediately, dose a detoxifying conditioner, and test daily for a week while the colony recovers, which typically takes 3-7 days rather than a full recycle.
